SMOKE

SMOKE is a dance theatre work co-directed by Kirk Page and Jade Dewi TyasTunggal that has been in development on Bundjalung Country in Northern NSW, Meanjin lands of the Yuggaera and Turrbal peoples lands and Indonesia.

Jade and Kirk have laid roots for this work by gathering first-hand experiences of being on-country both in Indonesia (Java, Bali, Kalimantan) and Australia (NSW, QLD). In particular learning TEK (traditional ecological knowledge) with Dayak community in Palangkaraya and Wodi Wodi community in Yuin Country, NSW.
Jade and Kirk collectively bring over 25 years of choreographic knowledge and physical theatre making to their process.

To date, Kirk and Jade have created several interdisciplinary performance works such as; Djurra, Horses Mouth and Defiant. Now coming together to create the new work; SMOKE – A hybrid performance work inspired by their cultural heritage lineages. Motivated by elements of fire and contemporary interpretations of the sacred and the mundane. SMOKE uses the languages of dance, theatre, spoken word, sound, projection, ariel and visual arts.

Fellow creatives on the project: Katina Olsen: a proud Wakka Wakka and Kombumerri dancer / choreographer currently based between Sydney and the Sunshine Coast in Australia; and Robert Alejandro Tinning is a Byron Bay/Perth based movement artist and choreographer Originally from San Lorenzo, Ecuador; and Aris Prabawa, visual artist from Java, Indonesia. An original sound score designed by creative collaborators Anna Liebzeit and Ria Soemardjo – both First Nations musicians and vocalists currently based in Melbourne.
